How to Incorporate AI in the Hospitality Industry & Beyond

AI tools, including ChatGPT, are everywhere. It's hard to read any article that tackles technology and business without citing the platform.

When it comes to ChatGPT, we know it is here to stay. Finding meaningful ways to use ChatGPT and integrating it into your business can be really useful, particularly when you are an independent business with a lean (but mighty!) team.

How to use AI
in the workplace

At Oyster Sunday, we have been using and researching new technologies to see how we can integrate AI not only into our business but also into our restaurant partners. If we take a step back, we realize that we have relied on predictive algorithms like spell check and Grammarly for years. This new era of AI is the next (and much anticipated) chapter in this book.

Although we know we are just scratching the surface, here are a few ways we have been using ChatGPT and AI in our workday:

  • Translating meeting minutes into executive summaries

  • Identifying keywords for digital ads

  • Identifying keywords to integrate into website SEO

  • Iterating on creative content: assisting with creative alternative text and direction

  • Thought starters for creative content

  • Looking up HTML code to add to the website to adjust UX design

  • Copy editing notes, checking for grammar usage, and cutting down paragraphs

The Intersection
of AI & Food

When it comes to the future of food, we turn to one of our advisors at Oyster Sunday, Mike Lee. He has been spending months researching the intersection of AI & Food.

Overall, the goal was simple, but the output was complex. To put it in his own words “ I wanted to look at all the recent developments in Generative AI through the lens of a food industry professional. Unlike so many knowledge work industries that ChatGPT and the like are expected to disrupt--like law, finance, software development, etc--where the thinking type is almost purely analytical, food is all about the complicated intersection of logic and emotion. As such, Generative AI's potential impact on food is similarly complex. How can a purely digital creative force affect an industry where the main product is forever analog? Where will generative AI force us to become more, or less, human? What are the big risks and opportunities we should all know about, whether one works in food or not? So many questions to explore.”

We hope you will take a moment to dive in here and check out his other works. He will be writing more on his Substack around this topic, as it evolves weekly, but in these three posts he wanted to educate readers on the foundational issues and most important questions to ask to think critically and imaginatively about the future of AI in food. It's designed for anyone to read, regardless of technical knowledge about what Generative AI is and how it works.

Additional AI
Tools & Resources

When it comes to AI tools and resources, it seems there are new AI tools coming out every day. Although there are many more out there and in the works, here are the few our team has been investigating.

ChatGPT

The tool that started it all. This is the primary tool our team has been utilizing. This is a conversational AI tool that allows you to ask anything from questions to prompts to snippets of code.

Midjourney

A text-to-image AI tool that can create any visual with any prompt. The community showcase shows the power of this tool and includes the prompt used to generate the AI image.

DALL-E

Another AI image tool focused on creating realistic images and art from a description in natural language.

tl:dv

A tool powered by GPT that transcribes and summarizes your calls. We have been testing these in our team meetings and they are super helpful if a team member can’t make a call, or if it is an important client meeting.

Should we be cautious about AI?

Overall, there is always caution to be taken with new technologies. Our team does not see AI as a replacement for talent, but rather someone on the other side of the line or Zoom call to whiteboard with. If we can use it with that in mind, we can become even more innovative and create content, equations, websites, and more that tell the full story of our businesses.
